Enterprise at Bow School
At Bow school of Maths and Computing we prepare our students to be enterprising individuals. Businesses need employees who are innovative in their approach to solving problems, can cope with uncertainty and change, communicate well and are able to work effectively in teams. The development of these skills in young people is therefore an essential part of the preparation for adult life. Developing enterprise capability is at the heart of our curriculum.
Enterprise learning requires an environment where students are expected to take personal responsibility for their own actions. At Bow, students are given significant autonomy to tackle relevant problems or issues, which involves an element of risk as well as reward for their successful resolution. This occurs in the day to day learning of the students and in the extra-curricular programme of activities on offer. Within these contexts, learning can be promoted by engaging students in an enterprise process, or approach, which is akin to project working in a work-based context.
Working in partnership with financial institutions such as Barclays Bank, Bank of America and Rothschild has formed an important part of developing student’s enterprise capability. In particular the Bank of America, Financial Employability Programme provide students with numerous opportunities to develop financial awareness, team building, leadership and presentation skills. The project based nature of the work challenges them to be enterprising.
During Years 8 and 9 students are encouraged to keep a record of the enterprising things they have done in their academic and social life. These portfolios can then be submitted to the NCFE awarding body to enable them to achieve a qualification, Certificate in Developing Enterprise Skills, equivalent of a B at GCSE.
At Bow School of Maths and Computing, enterprise capability means innovation, creativity, risk management and risk taking, as well as adopting a 'can-do' attitude and the drive to make ideas happen. It is supported by financial capability and economic and business understanding.
