New School Site - Important Information

As part of the Tower Hamlets Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, Bow School is to move into a new building.  The scheme is currently in the design phase and construction is due to start in Spring 2012.  The new building and grounds are due for completion in the summer of 2014.

Where is the proposed new site?

Bow Lock.  The site offers both calming views of the canal and inspirational/aspirational views of the city.  As the school is being built on a new site it means construction can take place without disruption to students’ learning.

Will it be a new building?

Yes, it will be a completely new building.  This gives the school the rare opportunity to work with architects to design a building which will offer excellent facilities in a safe environment.

Being part of the design process also gives us the opportunity to discuss additional facilities such as a drama studio and improved sports facilities.

The building will have state-of-the-art technology, including wi-fi - increasing the opportunities for the use of ICT in teaching & learning.

How will Bow School be involved in the design?

The architects and contractors have been involved in weekly meetings with the school for over a year now.  Careful consideration is being given to taking into account the views of staff, students and governors and there have been public consultation opportunities to hear the views of the wider community.

Who is the architect?

Van Heyningen & Haward are the architects.  They were appointed by the construction company Bouygues, and have experience of a wide range of projects in education and public institutions.

Who is the construction company?

Bouygues UK (BYUK), a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, and international company. Bouygues Construction have built a number of educational and public institutions and worked on several Building Schools for the Future schemes for London boroughs. Two recent projects including Bethnal Green Technology College and St Paul’s Way.  Bouygues have been shortlisted for the British Council for School Environments Award 2010.
