Geography

We aim to offer students a wide variety of ways in which to develop a sense of place, an appreciation of the environment and an understanding of global citizenship. To improve knowledge, understanding and developing skills and techniques through field work.

As a foundation subject in the National Curriculum, Geography is indispensable to an understanding of the modern world. As such, it should be studied for a reasonable amount of time by all pupils. It aims to provide a worthwhile and interesting educational experience for all pupils through a variety of teaching and learning strategies.

Aims

The study of Geography is particularly aimed at teaching pupils to:

  1. Develop an understanding of their surroundings and to extend their interest in and knowledge and understanding of more distant places.
  2. Acquire a perspective in which they can place local, national and international events.
  3. Learn about some of the important characteristics of the Earth's major physical systems (landforms, weather and climate, hydrology and ecology) and the interaction among these systems.
  4. Gain an understanding of the processes which have produced pattern and variety on the Earth's surface and which bring about change.
  5. Understand some of the relationships between people and environments including the influence of environmental conditions on human activities and the varied ways in which societies with different technologies, economic systems and cultural values have perceived, used, altered and created particular environments.
  6. Develop a sense of place and a sensitive awareness of the opportunities and constraints facing different people living in different places under diverse economic, social, cultural, ethnic, political and physical conditions.
  7. Develop a wide range of techniques, skills and competencies necessary for Geographical enquiry through practical work in the field. The skills include collection, representation, analysis, interpretation and the use of date, including maps and photographs.
  8. Act more effectively in the environment as individuals and as members of society.
