Year 7 Borough Debating Competition

July 2009

The motion was: This House believes that shops should not give away plastic bags.

Two teams were entered, consisting of: Rubayed, Tareq and Faizur (Bow 1) and Azim, Keisse and Kevin (Bow 2).

There were 12 teams in the competition so Bow 1 did fantastically well to get through to the final.

The London Debate Challenge Final

Hosted, organised and judged by the English Speaking Union, the event was held at Dartmouth House in Green Park.

The team from Bow that represented Tower Hamlets after winning the Borough Debating competition were: Gilbert Sabakaki, Badrul Alom, Zabed Ahmed and Isa Vassallio.

15 Boroughs took part in the competition and there were three rounds of debate: one prepared debate on: This House believes that footballers should be banned for being bad role models and two of which they had 30 minutes to prepare for unaided.

A prestigious range of guests were present including the Lord Mayor, and several borough mayors.

The judges were made up of people who had been winners of the World University Debating Championships and the World Schools Debating Championships.

Unfortunately despite their best efforts, the team from Bow were pipped to the post. However, Gilbert Sabakaki was judged the best speaker of the day – scoring individually the highest points of the day.

A few days before the event an extra team was requested to make up numbers as one Borough had had to withdraw; they could not however compete for a place in the final. A Year 7 team of Azim Khan, Faizur Rahman, Tareq Ahmed and Rubayed Ahmed were formed. Throughout the day they worked really hard and held their own against all the more experienced and older debaters.

Well done to all the boys who took part.
