Globe Theatre

May 2009

Over the past six months, Year 8 and 9 have been involved in a project run by the Globe Theatre. Never afraid to step into the limelight, the boys were keen to participate in drama workshops where they tried everything from acting as rabbits to presenting a film trailer for Macbeth and representing the Montagues and Capulets in Romeo and Juliet. It has been a brilliant opportunity for the boys to try out their dramatic ideas about how Shakespeare should be played and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

Involvement in the project also meant free tickets to see a performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Globe theatre.  The boys felt like kings as they were given the best seats in the house and enjoyed looking down at the standing groundlings below.  The performance was spectacular with wonderful scenery and much audience participation, just like in Shakespeare’s day! Isa Vassallo commented, ‘I didn’t realise that Shakespeare’s plays were like that!’

The culmination of the project will be another trip to the Globe, but this time with a difference…the boys will be the actors as they have the chance to look around the stage and use the practice rooms.  Watch this space for details of Bow’s budding young actors at the Globe!
