Bow students broaden international understanding through partnership with US and UK schools
March 2009
Bow school of Maths and Computing has formed a partnership with a network of schools in the UK and in the USA. This is called the TSIA. It is directly working with Celia Cruz Bronx High School for Music and School for Community Research and Learning in the Bronx in New York and the Leigh Technology Academy in Dartford, Kent.
The goal is to bring students and teachers from America and the United Kingdom together to improve educational outcomes by developing students' literacy skills and to broaden international understanding.
At Bow school, this has meant Year 9 students regularly discussing issues of global relevance on a shared web site with their fellow American and English students. A group of Year 9 students also visited the Leigh Academy to train their students on debating skills. Another opportunity they have had as part of their involvement was to take part in training provided by the Institute of Education on research skills so they can research the impact of the project.
Year 10 students have worked specifically with students from Celia Cruz Bronx High School for Music to produce the first edition of an international magazine that reports on issues relevant to teenagers in both countries.
Teachers from all the schools have visited each other's schools both in the UK and in the USA and regularly share ideas and information over the phone and by e-mail.
