Mucking Out with the Bow Boys!
22 June 2009
On Monday 22nd June 10 Bow Boys arrived at school bright and early, blurry eyed and wellies packed, ready to depart for the Somerset countryside. These young, intrepid adventurers were off to Jamie’s farm, working as farm hands in order to earn board and lodgings for the week. Jamie’s farm is a project that accommodates young people from inner city schools on a real working farm and gives them a taste of the countryside.
Every morning the boys would be up with the cockerels and tending to the farm animals before having a hearty breakfast themselves. They would then spend the day working on the farm; herding sheep, bailing hay, mucking out, picking fruit and vegetables for lunch and dinner and generally helping where needed. Every evening the boys would go on a long walk and maybe a swim in the river, before sitting around the family table for a meal consisting of produce from the farm.
The boys worked hard in the beautiful river valley farm and impressed the staff through their teamwork and communication skills. By the end of the week they were living and working as one big family, with supper often running late into the evening as boys stayed at the table to discuss the day’s activities and praise one another on their hard work.
