INSIDE – A SURPRISE FOR YEAR 10!
March 2010
On Friday 26th March Year 10 got a surprise after assembly when J.A. Jarman author of INSIDE the gritty teen novel about an inmate of a young offender’s institution came to talk to them.
The visit was a double surprise firstly as it had been arranged at short notice when the intended visit by another author had to be postponed and secondly because J.A. Jarman turned out to be not a tough guy who had experienced the life he wrote about but instead the self confessed ‘granny’ figure of well known children’s author Julia Jarman!
Julia explained how she had come across the story of Lee, the main character of the book, in a documentary and had decided to write it as a fiction book not to ‘glorify’ crime but to show how hard it really is for young criminals. She also explained the research she had to do to write the book and how it had affected her.
Year 10 were very impressed and listened attentively as Julia read an extract from the book.
Then a few lucky students, who were recommended by their English teachers for working particularly well, received a copy of the book signed by Julia.
The other good news is that those students who were disappointed not to get a copy of the book will be able to borrow it from our library or read the copy that will go into the new Year 10 classroom book boxes.
