World Book Day at Bow School of Maths and Computing

March 2010

On Thursday 4th March Bow School celebrated World Book Day!

Our Year 7 and 8 Reading Champions and Rothschild Reading Partners gathered in our library to meet Steve Feasey author of the ‘CHANGELING’ series of books.

Before Steve Feasey started his talk the student ‘Readers’ and the adult ‘Reading Partners’ got together in small groups to talk about books and reading and the volunteers read to the students.

In preparation for the talk each student was given a copy of ‘Changeling’ the first book in the series to get signed and Steve also donated a ‘Changeling’ badge each.

Then our librarian read a poem, from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ about how it is better to read than watch television.
Finally we were ready for Steve Feasey and he was well worth waiting for!

He talked about what inspired him to write horror stories and about the horror genre in books, films and games.

He talked about his style of writing and the different characters and creatures in his books and where the ideas for them came from.

All the way through Steve was happy to answer students questions and, after he had read them a ‘cliff hanging’ extract from the book, he finished by answering even more questions.

Steve then had a chance to chat to individual students while he signed their books.

The other way in which Bow celebrated World Book Day was by obtaining World Book Day tokens for all Year 7 and 8 students. These tokens are worth £1 and can be swopped for a special World Book Day ‘double’ book or used to get £1 off a full priced book.

Our local bookshop ‘Victoria Park Books’ came along to our library for this event and our ‘Readers’ were able to swop their tokens for a special World Book Day book straight away!

We had a wonderful World Book Day here at Bow School of Maths and Computing and are looking forward to a great year of reading until the next one!
