YEAR 7 READING CHAMPIONS LEAD THE WAY

June 2009

…Year 7 Reading Champions Create Reading Culture at Bow School…

The first event of the 2009 Tower Hamlets Book Award was attended by four of our Year 7 Reading Champions. This event was about choosing the longlist of books for the award!

Safwan Ahmed, Abdul Hassan, Nahim Ahad and Musa Can Uzum - along with students from other local schools - were asked to choose the books from a very large selection of children’s paperbacks that had been published within the last 12 months. From the recommendations of the students this was eventually whittled down to 25 books!

Mr Mitchell, who has supervised the Year 7 Reading Champions this year, said “I am glad to say that all of the books that the boys picked out and presented to the rest of the group – which included teachers and librarians - were selected for the long list.”

They now have to get on and read as many of the books as possible and promote them to others so we can get a good result when we vote for the shortlist in September and the winner in December!

This year’s Reading Champions and those we select in September, from the new Year 7, will be participating in other events for the 2009 Tower Hamlets Book Award including organising the voting for the short list and Bow’s choice for the winning book and preparing a presentation for the Grand Finale in December – this will be another event for Bow Reading Champions to impress at!

Two of the favourite books from the selection so far are:

'The Demon Assassin', by Alan Gibbons

Chosen by Safwan Ahmed:

Half demon and half human, 15 year-old Paul Rectorr’s fate is intertwined with that of King Lud, the ancient founder of London, who wishes to take back control of his city. In this sequel to Scared to Death, Paul takes the hell’s underground back to the time of the blitz where he uncovers a plot to assassinate Winston Churchill and change the path of history...

'Iron Hand', by Charlie Fletcher

Chosen by Abdul Hassan:

Continuing the adventure begun in ‘Stoneheart’, where George and Edie are plunged into a world beneath London where sculptures move and stone carvings fight, Iron Hand is a breathless series of scrapes and escapes that involve some of the best known statues of London, including the timely intervention of Boadicca and her daughters.
