Facts

If a student is consistently late or absent from school with no authority then a Penalty Notice and Fine may be issued. The following actions will be initiated in the order shown below, with each stage being implemented only if there has been no response to the previous warning.

  1. WARNING LETTER 1: A 4-week notice to improve
  2. WARNING LETTER 2: A second notice to improve if no improvement has been seen
  3. FORMAL WARNING: From the Tower Hamlets Local Authority Attendance & Welfare Service
  4. PENALTY NOTICE AND FINE: £50.00 to be paid within 28 days
  5. WARNING LETTER 3: Fine increased to £100.00 to be paid within 14 days
  6. FAST TRACK PROSECUTION**: This will be implemented if the penalty notice has not been paid

* As at Spring Term 2008 Bow School was in 3rd place in the Borough attendance league table with an attendance rate of 93.8%
** A fast track prosecution under section 444 1996 Education Act – penalty notices are issued by the Tower Hamlets Local Authority Attendance & Welfare Service
