GCSE languages (French and Spanish) at Bow develops students’ language skills in a variety of contexts and embeds a broad understanding of the culture of countries and communities where the languages are spoken.

KS3

Year 7:

Students are introduced to sound-symbol correspondences early on which helps them to understand how letters and letter combinations are pronounced. There is a specific focus on vowels, silent sounds and accented letters. This is reinforced through the teaching of phonics and dictation activities.

Year 8:

Students are expected to develop and build on their understanding of grammar and phonics. In order to ensure accurate pronunciation and transcription, students focus on morphology, looking at the relationship between sounds (vowel and consonants).

Year 9:

At this stage, students should have a good level of grammatical and phonetical understanding. Students delve deeper into the morphology of the language, looking at word formation, suffixes and grammar patterns. This is reinforced through grammar exercises, routinely teaching phonics and dictation activities.

KS4

The new GCSE specification requires new tasks such as dictation and read out loud, so we have implemented in our new scheme of work tasks in lessons to address this requirement.
