A Day in the Life of a Y11 Student

A Day in the Life of a Y11 Student

Each day begins early, during our mock exams, with many students waking up before sunrise to fit in some last-minute revision. The journey to school is often spent flipping through flashcards or scrolling through notes on our phones, trying to absorb as much information as possible.

Upon arrival at school, the atmosphere is all business. In the canteen, library, and all around the school, students discuss exam topics, testing each other on key facts and checking their notes.

At 8:30 AM, we store our coats, bags and mobile devices, and then head into the Dance Studio, ready for some final words of wisdom from subject teachers. At 9:00 AM we file into the hall and take our seats, under the watchful eyes of invigilators. Once the clock starts ticking - it’s a test of knowledge, focus and time management. Whatever the subject each exam brings its own set of challenges.

When the exam ends, there’s a collective sigh of relief as students leave the hall. Some feel confident, while others dissect their answers with friends, wondering if they wrote enough or if they misunderstood a question.

The afternoon might bring another paper, requiring students to reset and refocus. Those without an afternoon exam attend lessons, though teachers often tailor sessions to revision, offering support for upcoming exams. Lunchtime is a mix of emotions, some students unwind with friends, while others huddle in groups again, going over notes and quizzing each other. Some find a quiet spot to sit, making the most of their final minutes before heading back to the exam hall.

The second exam of the day follows a similar routine: silence, deep breaths, and intense concentration. Students push through the challenge, knowing that every paper brings them one step closer to their GCSEs.

By the time the school day ends, everyone knows just how hard they’ve worked. Some students stay behind for revision workshops or independent study, while others head home to continue preparing. For those best prepared, evenings are spent reviewing notes, completing practice questions, or watching online tutorials for extra support.

As the fortnight progresses, students become accustomed to the routine of study, exam, repeat. The experience is mentally and physically challenging, but it builds resilience. For many, it helps to highlight areas to improve before the real GCSEs. Mock exams may not be the real thing, but they are an essential milestone on our journey to success!
