Thank You to Our Know Your Onions Students
We are pleased to share that our Year 7 students have recently taken part in the Know Your Onions project. Know Your Onions is a program run by the charity ‘School Food Matters’. The charity aims to improve food in schools, teach children and young people about cooking, growing and enjoying food for their health and happiness.
This was a brilliant project to be part of and was designed to help students develop their understanding of healthy eating, food preparation and horticulture.
There were 5 Workshops the students have taken part of:
-
Fish Cooking Class: Students learned how to prepare and cook fish. They have learnt the importance of cooking techniques and healthy eating.
-
Gardening Session: This workshop introduced students to basic gardening skills such as planting seeds, understanding soil types and maintaining healthy plants. It aimed to build awareness of where food comes from.
-
Farm Visit to Stepney City Farm: During this visit to Stepney City Farm, they have learned about crop cycles and also saw how food is grown and cared for.
-
Vegetarian Cooking Class: In this session, students explored plant-based cooking. They learned how to prepare healthy, balanced vegetarian meals using fresh vegetables and herbs.
-
Whitechapel Market Sale Day: Students took part in Whitechapel Market, where they sold produce from what they have grown in the Garden activity. They practised talking to customers, learned how to sell their produce and worked together as a team while taking part in a fun market day with the local community.
We are proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing how they continue to grow and apply what they’ve learned in the future.
