Y10 - Stemette Monster Confidence Tour - Friday 19th October 2017 at Plexal, Stratford

Y10 girls were invited to the Stemette’s Monster Confidence tour on Friday 19th October 2017.  The day was designed to give girls and young women aged 15-22 a boost of confidence to pursue careers in STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Maths). The day offered a packed schedule of Workshops, inspirational content and the opportunity to meet women in the STEM industries.  The girls heard from inspirational keynotes with lightning talks and they attended Workshops curated and run by jobsite Monster. The Workshops included CV tips and presenting with confidence, Q&A with a panel, meeting professionals from STEM industries at the exhibition and speed mentoring.

Girls to the Front KS3

On Saturday 18th November 2017, ten girls from Y10, Y9 and Y7 showed great commitment and determination by giving up their Saturday to go to the Deptford Green School’s first ever conference of the Feminism in Schools Network. The purpose of the conference was to inspire secondary-aged girls to think about political and community leadership, encourage girls and teachers to set up Feminist Societies in their schools and develop a network of Feminist Societies across schools.

A full day packed with motivational speeches, workshops on leadership in politics, campaigning, community work and journalism. As well as attending Ambition and Confidence Building workshops, the girls were able to network and take part in action planning sessions with a view to setting up a Feminist Group at Bow School. The organisers also launched a campaign to celebrate 100 years of female suffrage.

Y9 Stemette’s ‘STEM in a Day’ at Accenture

It is widely acknowledged that STEM careers are male dominated with only 13% of the overall UK STEM workforce being female. Did you know only 10% of girls study Computer Science at A Level and only 19% of young women study Computer Studies?

On Monday 20th November 2017, Y9 girls were invited to the Stemette’s ‘STEM in a Day’ at Accenture. Accenture PLC is a global management consulting and professional services company that provides strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations services.

Working in teams with girls from Green Spring Academy, the girls had the opportunity to create an app for home security, deliver a pitch to tech consultants and the group about the features of the app, marketing, subscription and costs. The girls designed fantastic apps and gave professional well-thought out pitches.

A fun day with lots of hands on learning about app development!
