Curriculum

Our Curriculum

Our curriculum has been designed to support our school vision of securing excellent outcomes for every Bow Student, now and for future generations.

To achieve this, we use every lesson to expose our students to the best of what has been thought and said, providing them with the awareness and understanding to thrive in all walks of life.

Through the curriculum we are constantly challenging them to apply their learning to become world and career ready. By relating lessons to local and global issues we stimulate debate, build enthusiasm for learning and extend cultural capital.

By relating lessons to local and global issues we stimulate debate, build enthusiasm for learning and extend cultural capital.

Our goal is to ensure students can sufficiently recall and implement the knowledge they gather, utilising it by themselves in new scenarios. Existing learning is revisited in greater depth and complexity as students progress though their studies. In doing so, we build long-term understanding and retention of subject matter, nurturing the confidence for sound application and independent thought.

Throughout learning we embed our school values; curiosity, adaptability, respect and determination. We believe these characteristics instil a hunger to succeed and provide our students with the resilience to flourish, both in school and modern society.

It is our intention that this approach to learning means students leave us capable of applying knowledge with the subtlety and sophistication that is required to thrive in real life. Hallmarks of a Bow student are their ability to communicate effectively, creatively solve problems, thrive independently and work collaboratively, traits that we believe serve them well now and in their future pathways.

Our curriculum intent demonstrates our dedication to:

  • Delivering an ambitious curriculum that is designed to meet our high expectations by inspiring aspirational attainment targets and elevating academic standards.
  • Ensuring each subject has clearly defined links from one year to the next, giving students the opportunity to return to key areas of learning that will underpin knowledge and future progress
  • Holding to account each subject leader with the responsibility for making sure every member of their team has the understanding, resources and capability to deliver our sophisticated curriculum
  • Accumulative Assessments that challenge students’ learning to date, rather than just recently acquired knowledge, to provide clear progress data and allow teachers to shape their future planning
  • Underpinning teacher training with contemporary approaches to learning that have been designed through rigorous research and robust testing
  • Challenging social or circumstantial disadvantage so that every student, irrespective of ability and starting point, can depend on bespoke Intervention, Pastoral, SEN and Inclusion frameworks to realise their potential, ensuring that support is communicated, tracked and its impact is assessed
  • Preparing students for the increased demands before transition into each key stage, starting from Year 6 students joining the school through to those ready to leave us for university, an apprenticeship, a job or any other chosen destination
  • Advancing awareness of the possibilities and expectations that exist in the modern workplace through a coordinated careers programme
  • Helping students become confident, culturally aware global citizens by exploring political, social and moral issues through a coordinated pastoral curriculum that encompasses PSHE, Citizenship, tutor groups and assemblies, and thus maximising students’ personal growth outside of lessons
  • Giving students the freedom to explore interests and develop their individuality through an extensive enrichment programme
