Year 7
Big ideas:
Preparing for life and work
- Personal and social development
- Safe and healthy living
- Living together
- Democracy and participation
Why this?
Year 7 begins with an introduction to KS3 PSHE & Citizenship to allow teachers and students to begin to build the safe, secure and trusted classroom environment essential for the delivery of PSHE & citizenship content. It introduces students to some of the sensitive topics we will cover in a non-threatening way and gets students and teachers thinking about the lessons that will follow through Year 7. Lessons are developed and continually updated to reflect national and local opportunities and challenges and to meet the needs of Bow students.
Why now?
It is important for Year 7 students to see connections particularly with the PSHE curriculum they will have completed in primary school. To this end the PSHE topics covered in Year 7 reflect that. Each of these is covered briefly in the introductory lessons. The lessons also introduce students to the themes covered in more depth throughout KS3 in Citizenship.

How do your assessment strategies support student’s long term memory? |
PSHE & Citizenship assessment is done using ISPATIVE assessment. Students complete a ‘Baseline assessment task’. This allows teachers to assess where students are at the start of the unit. Students revisit the Baseline assessment task at the end of each unit. Each unit has a P4C lesson which allows the teacher to assess class knowledge and understanding as well as demonstrate core PSHE skills. |

Year 8
Why this?
Year 8 PSHE looks at drugs, feelings and relationship and social media and life online. This reflects the changes students are experiencing and looks at these themes in more depth. Year 8 Citizenship covers democracy, money and the media again acknowledging the growing awareness students will have of these topics. Lessons are developed and continually updated to reflect national and local opportunities and challenges and to meet the needs of Bow students.
Why now?
The PSHE units in Year 8 all reflect to students that they are maturing and becoming more independent. The units look at some of the challenges and opportunities this brings. The Citizenship units show students that there are many ways to participate in democracy other than voting. The units follow on from Year 7 and lay a foundation for the Year 9 programme of study.

Year 9
Why this?
Year 9 PSHE covers relationships, sex, lifestyle choices and staying safe. These themes all reflect changes students are experiencing and aims to give them the knowledge and confidence to make positive and informed choices. Year 9 Citizenship units focus on introducing the central themes of the Citizenship GCSE to give students a clear idea if this is a subject they wish to study at GCSE.
Why now?
The units reflect the growing maturity of students who will begin to discuss and think about these themes as young adults. The choice of topics reflect the needs, challenges and opportunities Bow students experience in and beyond school.

Year 10
Big ideas:
- Preparing for life and work
- Personal and social development
- Safe and healthy living
- Living together
- Democracy and participation
Why this?
The KS4 curriculum starts with discrimination. This allows students to and teachers to begin with familiar yet challenging topics such that affect communities and identity. The aim is to build the safe and secure environment required for effective delivery of further units.
Why now?
Staff and students begin with a challenging topic for KS4 building essential knowledge and skills for challenging discrimination. This sets a foundation for sensitive and person centred topics which follow such as Mental health and self-esteem and Relationships and Sex units. Both of these build on the units covered at KS3 at an age appropriate level for KS4 students. It also ensures students receive KS4 RSE that meet DfE guidelines. The Citizenship content looks at the units covered in KS3 in more depth and in a way that aims to encourage active participation in democracy.
