Tower Hamlets Badminton Tournament

Tower Hamlets Badminton Tournament

On Monday 17th October eight boys from Years 7,8 & 9 represented Bow School in the Tower Hamlets Badminton Tournament held at Bethnal Green Technology College. The tournament was split into a Year 9 competition and a combined Years 7 & 8 competition. All our boys performed well but with mixed results.

The Year 9 teams did not qualify from the group stages as their nerves seemed to get the better of them.  The boys in the Year 7 & 8 tournament fared much better. Both pairs, Samuel & Jaman and Aman & Kibria, finished third in their groups and just missed out on qualifying for the semi finals.

While this result seemed fair for Samuel and Jaman, Aman and Kibria were surprised as they had only lost one out of 7 matches.  In a dramatic turn of events the error was discovered and the situation was quickly rectified allowing Aman and Kibria to take their rightful place in the tournament semi finals.  The semi final became a nervous affair for the recently reprieved duo as the score kept swinging back and forth. Despite this Aman and Kibria came through to claim their place in the final!

So onto the final and the Bow team were facing the only team to beat them in the group stages! Not only did they originally lose, they lost 7-1! The boys went into the final as the clear second favourites! The opening exchanges were tight and it was clear that Aman and Kibria had adjusted their tactics to combat the power of the tall and strong opposition from Stepney Green.  At 2-2 the game was very tight in a race to 11.  This time it was the boys from Bow that found another gear and by winning a straight eight points and taking the lead to 10-2 it seemed that they were destined to come through as champions.  Before the boys were able to confirm the title there was a short fight back from Stepney Green, this did not last long as Kibria played a deep shot to the back court, forcing the opposition back and from their return shot Aman stepped in and smashed the shuttle down to the ground to get the 11th point and seal the 11-3 victory for Bow School!

Aman and Kibria were the victorious pair in the Year 7 & 8 tournament but every boy that represented Bow School at the Badminton tournament was a credit to the school, so well done to:
